Starting the New Year at the Judaica Shop

Click here to shop our new online Judaica store!!

At the Judaica Shop, we are excited to start off the New Year by unveiling our NEW shopping website through Judaica Beautiful.
The NEW website (http://bnaijacob.judaicabeautiful.com/store/) is in addition to our brick-and-mortar Judaica Shop
and our Judaica Shop webpage here on the synagogue’s website. Our hope is that it will generate additional funds for our synagogue
beyond our existing sales at the Judaica Shop.

While our page on the synagogue’s website simply highlights the items carried in our Shop,
the NEW Judaica Beautiful website is a shopping website that enables you to purchase Judaica items online.
Here are important details to note about using our NEW shopping website:

1. The synagogue receives a smaller percentage from your purchases through Judaica Beautiful
than when you purchase directly from the Judaica Shop.
2. The Judaica Shop will match any price listed on Judaica Beautiful. However, since an independent retailer runs Judaica Beautiful,
their website will not be able to match any of our Shop’s lower/sale prices.
3. Purchases from Judaica Beautiful can only be returned to the online shopping website—not in-store.
4. Our Judaica Shop carries a wider selection in-store than the one found through Judaica Beautiful.
Still, you may find an item on the shopping website that we do not carry in-store.
If you prefer to see an item in person and make your purchase directly from the Shop,
we will be happy to order it for you directly from the artist to our Shop.
5. When you visit our Judaica Shop at the synagogue, you will experience personalized service
with your selection and purchase. While the Judaica Beautiful website is open 24/7,
our Shop volunteers are always happy to meet you there at your convenience in addition to
our regular hours.

Of course, for those of you who already shop online regularly, we know you will love the opportunity
to buy from our Judaica Beautiful website and support B’nai Jacob at the same time.
The shopping website provides detailed information and close-up photographs of all its Judaica,
but keep in mind that the digital world can never match the abilty to touch and feel the item in-store,
and cannot replicate the social experience of meeting with our volunteers for
suggestions and guidance with your purchase.

Spiritual Lights at the Judaica Shop
Congregation B'nai Jacob, 75 Rimmon Road, Woodbridge, CT
Cassandre Recycled Glass Menorah
Light infuses everything Jewish. It plays a significant part in our daily and holiday rituals:
At home, there are the candle-lighting ceremonies that usher in Shabbat and the major Jewish holidays,
the havdalah ceremony that concludes the Shabbat, and the yahrzeit candles we burn for 24 hours
to commemorate the death of a loved one. In our synagogues, a lamp called the ner tamid, the eternal flame, is a continual light.

The number of Hebrew words that mean or refer to light is yet another reflection of the importance of light in Judaism.
In the Bible, references to light appear at least 36 times, while the Psalms contain hundreds of light references.
The simplest word, ohr, is used when God said, "Let there be light" on the first day of creation. Zohar, aish, and ziv
are other words in the Hebrew vocabulary that mean light.

Light is also a physical manifestation of the spiritual. Light emanates from the teachings of the Torah and is a symbol of God's presence,
and our mission as Jews is to be "a light unto the nations." (Isaiah 42:6). The spiritual essence of light is best revealed in Proverbs 20:27,
"Ki Ner Elokim Nishmat Adam," "The candle of God is the soul of man."

Glass & crystal Menorah by Anat Mayer
While the concrete miracle of Chanukah was the oil, sufficient for one day, that lasted eight, the underlying miracle
was the ability of the Jewish people's spirit to resist the efforts of the Greeks
to persecute, convert, or destroy them. To mark both of these miracles, the rabbis mandated
that we not only light the chanukiah, or menorah, but that it is displayed in the window
to publicize the miracle.

Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, begins (earlier)this year on Sunday night, December 11th.
The Judaica Shop has many unique menorot to help you express your own inner, spiritual light...

As the Jewish month of Elul arrives, and in preparation for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Jews all over the world
traditionally begin the process of chesh-bon ha-nefesh—an “accounting of the soul” or self-reflection on what we have done well,
done poorly or not done at all. In this spirit, now is the best time to assess the progress of the Judaica Shop at Congregation B’nai Jacob.

The mission of the Judaica Shop goes beyond raising funds for the synagogue. The Shop, run entirely by volunteers,
is committed to increasing the knowledge of Jewish customs and ritual by offering a full range of Judaica items
to fill gift, holiday, milestone and everyday needs of synagogue and community members. The shop further encourages
hiddur mitzvah—enhancing and embellishing the celebration of Jewish ritual by purchasing ritual objects that are aesthetically appealing.

In addition to supporting local Jewish life, supporting Israel is an important part of the Shop’s mission. I just returned
from another trip to Israel, and have introduced three new lines of Israeli jewelry to our collection of existing designers...

Summer is here and there are still many different occasions, like an engagement or wedding,
anniversary, births and birthday, or housewarming that will give you the opportunity to give someone a gift.
A summer gift could also be the perfect idea to brighten up someone’s special day
or may just be a chance to be a good friend. While the Judaica Shop is only open
by appointment during the summer, we are happy to meet you there at a time
convenient for you and assist you in finding that unique gift for these different occasions.

Gift giving can be especially important in these economic times as it is an important part of
human interaction, helping to define relationships and strengthen bonds with family and friends.
And it is often the giver, rather than the recipient, who gains the most psychologically
from giving a gift. Especially in these times, the Judaica Shop can save you time and money
by helping you select special gifts without breaking the budget...

Much of the Hanukkah celebration takes place at home with family and friends.

of our religious values and spiritual way of life in the face of religious persecution
and oppression by the Greek-Syrians. The Judaica Shop provides a

Celebrate Israel's 60th
Congregation B'nai Jacob, 75 Rimmon Road, Woodbridge, CT
Dan Shamir Bouquet
In a few weeks, the celebrations marking Israel’s 60th anniversary will peak. The uninterested may only associate
visual images of war and intractable conflict with Israel. That view, though, ignores Israel’s thriving, diverse society, the beauty of its land
and the extraordinary achievements of its people. The country has become an incredible hub of science, technology, and the arts.
To celebrate some of its latest accomplishments, visit Good News from Israel: Good news from the 100th smallest country,
with less than 1/1000th of the world’s population
at http://www.newsoftheday.com/.
In particular, I am completely captivated by the sophistication of Israeli art and design. The creativity of Israel’s talented designers and artists
is expressed in their continued art and craft production. The country generates more than just Judaica and as a result, our Judaica Shop
carries many items made in Israel that can be worn or displayed year-round, not just for Jewish holidays or life cycle events...

The Judaica Shop—Ready to Spring into Passover
Congregation B'nai Jacob, 75 Rimmon Road, Woodbridge, CT
Miriam's Cup
Since Passover is celebrated in the spring, a time of renewal and rebirth, my mother, z"l,
always made sure when I was growing up that I had new clothing to wear for the seder.
I have since extended this tradition so that every Passover I have something new to put on
the seder table or to contribute to the seder ritual. The Judaica Shop, amid its extensive selection
of over 40 seder plates and 12 matzah plates, 20 Miriam’s cups and Elijah cups, Kiddush cups,
matzah covers, haggadot, wash cups, and cookbooks, has some new items for your
Passover celebration this year...
